Level 2 Safe Moving and Handling (QCF)

Level 2 Safe Moving and HandlingDescription
Manual Handling injuries are the cause of most lost working days in the UK, with sprains and strains due to the incorrect lifting and moving of objects causing most suffering to employees.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and subsequent Regulations require that employees are provided with information and training and this general requirement should be supplemented with specific training and information on manual handling.

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations do not set any weight limits for lifting and carrying loads and amendments in 2002 clearly now require employees to have adequate or appropriate knowledge or training. The Regulations will apply to nearly all work activities from offices to care homes and factories. There will be different risks associated with different sectors and the Level 2 Award in Safe Moving and Handling offers learning outcomes which are suitable for all.

The qualification provides an effective means of ensuring that employees are aware of their responsibilities and have understood the principles of the safe moving and lifting of loads.

A minimum of 20 contact hours (2 days) in the classroom, consisting of practical and theoretical activities, plus some pre-course activity could be required.

A range of subjects are covered including:

  • Understanding the reasons for safe manual handling
  • Understanding how manual handling assessments contribute to improving health and safety
  • Understanding the principles, types of equipment and testing requirements associated with manual handling safety
  • Being able to apply safe manual handling principles

Each unit of this qualification is assessed in two parts.

Part one tests learners' knowledge on the subject and is assessed by a 30-minute 15 question multiple-choice examination.

Successful learners must achieve at least 10 out of 15 on each test to pass this element of the qualification.

Part two is a competency-based assessment carried out by the nominated tutor.

Learners must practically demonstrate the application of the correct techniques as indicated within the learning outcomes of the unit.

PLEASE NOTE: Practical assessment for this course WILL include lifting and turning. Whilst the emphasis on this course is moving safely rather than strength, there is a small risk of injury and learners will be asked to disclose any injuries and sign to confirm their understanding of the risk.
